In this 2023 review, the authors focused on electrolyzed reduced water (ERW) — water that has been processed through electrolysis. This process can raise pH, lower oxidation-reduction potential, and create dissolved molecular hydrogen.

The central question was whether these properties might help the body manage oxidative stress — a condition in which highly reactive molecules accumulate faster than the body can neutralize them. In excess, these molecules can damage cell membranes, proteins, and DNA, and they are associated with inflammation, aging, and many chronic diseases.

The review explains that molecular hydrogen may help neutralize some harmful reactive oxygen species while leaving useful cellular signaling molecules intact. It also discusses early research suggesting ERW may support antioxidant activity and help protect cells from oxidative damage.

However, much of the evidence reviewed comes from laboratory and animal studies, with fewer well-controlled human trials. That means ERW is an interesting and developing area of research, but it should not yet be presented as a proven treatment or prevention strategy for disease.

The practical takeaway is that electrolyzed reduced water may support the body’s antioxidant defenses, largely because of its dissolved molecular hydrogen, but stronger human clinical evidence is still needed.
