A
Acid Neutralization
The gentle buffering of excess gastric or metabolic acidity. Higher-pH alkaline water is often explored for its ability to calm acid discomfort and support digestive ease.
Alkaline Reduced Water
Another name for electrolyzed alkaline water rich in dissolved molecular hydrogen and a negative ORP.
Alkaline Water
Water with a pH above 7. Kangen Water is typically enjoyed at 8.5–9.5 pH for daily drinking.
Antioxidant
A substance that helps neutralize unstable molecules called free radicals, easing oxidative stress in the body.
Aquifer
An underground layer of porous rock or sediment that holds and slowly moves groundwater — the quiet source beneath many springs and wells.
Artesian Water
Water drawn from a confined aquifer under enough natural pressure to rise on its own toward the surface.
Atom
The smallest unit of a chemical element — hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and others. Atoms join together to form the molecules that make up water, minerals, and every living tissue in the body.
B
Biofilm
A thin, slippery community of microbes that can form inside pipes, bottles and fittings when water sits still — a reason freshness matters.
Biomarkers
Measurable signals in blood, urine or tissue that reveal how the body is responding to stress, hydration or intervention — used in many water studies to track real physiological change.
Blood Viscosity
The thickness and flow-resistance of blood. Better hydration tends to lower viscosity, easing circulation and post-exercise recovery.
Bottled Water
Water packaged in plastic or glass for convenience. While it offers portability, it often carries concerns about microplastics, chemical leaching, environmental waste, and cost over time — themes explored in our articles on the real price of bottled water.
BPA / Phthalates / Endocrine Disruptors
Industrial chemicals found in some plastics that can mimic or interfere with hormones. A common concern when water is stored in low-grade plastic bottles.
C
Cell Membrane / Membrane Potential
The thin, protective boundary of every cell that separates the inside from the outside world. Its electrical charge — the membrane potential — powers nerve signals, muscle movement, nutrient entry, and the subtle voltage that keeps cells alive.
Cellular Intracellular Hydration
Deep hydration at the inner cellular level, supporting the body's ability to flush metabolic waste, carry nutrients, and maintain the watery environment where life processes unfold.
Cellular Voltage
The tiny electrical charge across cell membranes. Healthy cells run on a slightly negative voltage; oxidative stress can drain it.
Chlorine / Chloramine / Fluoride
Disinfectants and additives commonly carried by municipal tap water. Some drinkers prefer to filter or reduce them for taste, smell or personal health reasons.
Cytotoxic
Harmful to living cells. In water research, the term often describes the most damaging reactive oxygen species that molecular hydrogen may help balance.

Deionized Water
Water that has had its charged mineral ions stripped away through ion-exchange resins, leaving it chemically empty. Useful in laboratories, but not the first choice for drinking because it lacks the minerals and electrolytes water normally carries.
Distilled Water
Water created by boiling it into steam and condensing it back into liquid. This removes many contaminants, but also strips away the beneficial minerals and electrolytes that give drinking water its character and physiological role.
Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
A rigorous study design where neither participants nor researchers know who receives the treatment until the data is collected — considered one of the strongest forms of clinical evidence.

Electrolysis
The process of passing an electric current through water to split it into alkaline and acidic streams — the core technology inside an ionizer.
Electrolyzed High-pH Water
Tap water that has been electrically split to produce an alkaline, hydrogen-rich drinking stream.
Electrolytes
Minerals that carry an electric charge — sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and others. They help regulate hydration, nerve impulses, muscle function, and the electrical balance of fluids inside and outside cells.
Electrolyzed Reduced Water (ERW)
Water passed through an ionizer's electrodes, gaining dissolved molecular hydrogen and a negative ORP.
Enhanced Bioavailability
The body's improved ability to absorb and use the alkaline minerals — calcium, magnesium, potassium — dissolved in water, making hydration more physiologically useful.
Extracellular Fluid
All the fluid outside our cells, including blood plasma and the interstitial fluid that surrounds tissues. It transports nutrients, carries away waste, and helps maintain the stable environment cells need to function.

Free Radical Scavenging
The process by which antioxidants seek out and neutralize unstable free radicals caused by pollution, stress, and poor diet, helping protect cells from oxidative damage.
Free Radicals
Unstable molecules with unpaired electrons that can damage cells if they accumulate faster than the body can neutralize them.
H
Home Water Ionization Systems
Countertop or under-sink devices that transform ordinary tap water into fresh, alkaline, hydrogen-rich drinking water through electrolysis. Kangen Water machines are the example we know, use, and recommend.
Homeostasis
The body's ongoing effort to keep its internal conditions — temperature, pH, fluid balance, voltage — within a stable, life-supporting range. Water plays a quiet but central role in this regulation.
Hydrogen Tablets
Portable tablets that release molecular hydrogen when dropped into water. They offer a biochemical shortcut for on-the-go use, though we prefer electrolysis for the negative ions and complete living-water profile.
Hydrogen Water
Water infused with dissolved molecular hydrogen (H₂), the element most linked to the antioxidant effect of ionized water.
Hydrogen Water Bottles
Portable, battery-powered bottles that infuse water with hydrogen for travel or the office. Useful away from home, but not a replacement for a home ionization system for daily drinking, cooking, and household use.
Hydroxyl Radical (·OH)
A particularly reactive and damaging free radical, often cited in molecular hydrogen research as a key radical H₂ may help balance.
I
Interstitial Fluid
The clear, salty liquid that bathes every cell, carrying nutrients, oxygen, and chemical messages between blood vessels and tissues. It is the watery medium in which much of cellular communication happens.
Intracellular Fluid
The water held inside our cells — the body's largest reservoir of water. Its mineral balance and electrical charge help maintain cell shape, membrane voltage, and the internal environment where life processes occur.
Ion Channels / Ion Gates
Tiny protein passageways in cell membranes that open and close to let charged particles (ions) move through. They regulate nerve signals, muscle contraction, hydration, and the electrical voltage across every living cell.
Ionization
The process of using electricity to separate water into alkaline and acidic fractions, shifting pH and ORP while dissolving molecular hydrogen into the drinking stream.
Ionized Water
Unlike deionized or distilled water, ionized water keeps its natural minerals and is specifically structured through electrolysis to increase dissolved molecular hydrogen and alkalinity.
Ionizer
A countertop or under-sink device that electrolyzes filtered tap water into acidic and alkaline streams.
Ions — Negative Ions (in the body)
Negatively charged atoms or molecules, abundant in fresh, moving water and electrolyzed water. In the body, they help maintain the healthy negative voltage that keeps cells energized and communication flowing.
Ions — Positive Ions (in the body)
Positively charged ions, such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. They are essential for nerve impulses, muscle contraction, and the electrical gradients that power cellular life.
K
Kangen Water
Enagic's branded electrolyzed alkaline water, produced by their medical-grade ionizers since 1974.
M
Micro-clustering / Reduced Cluster Size
The idea, widely referenced in ionizer circles, that electrolysis rearranges water molecules into smaller, more mobile groupings that may penetrate cells and tissues more readily.
Microbiome Optimization
Supporting a balanced gut environment by reducing harmful bacterial loads and encouraging beneficial, inflammation-calming microbes — an area of interest for alkaline water's systemic effects.
Microplastics
Tiny plastic fragments, often smaller than a grain of rice, now commonly found in bottled water and linked to concerns about long-term exposure.
Mineralization
The natural minerals — calcium, magnesium, potassium and more — dissolved in water as it moves through rock. They shape both taste and physiology.
Molecule
Two or more atoms bonded together. A water molecule is H₂O — two hydrogen atoms paired with one oxygen atom — and it is the fundamental carrier of hydration, minerals, and dissolved gases throughout the body.
Molecular Hydrogen (H₂ Retention)
The dissolved hydrogen gas produced during electrolysis, held in abundance in freshly ionized water. It is widely studied for its ability to cross cell membranes and exert gentle, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant effects.
Mouthfeel
The tactile impression of water on the palate — silky, thin, prickly, mineral.

Negative ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential)
A measurement indicating a fluid's ability to act as an antioxidant. A more negative value means a higher capacity to donate electrons and neutralize unstable molecules.
O
ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential)
A millivolt measurement of a liquid's tendency to oxidize or reduce. Negative ORP is considered antioxidant.
Osmosis
The movement of water across a membrane from a less concentrated solution toward a more concentrated one. It is one of the ways cells and tissues balance hydration and mineral levels without using energy directly.
Oxidation-Reduction
The chemical give-and-take of electrons. In the body, too much oxidation can damage cells; reduction helps restore them.
Oxidative Stress
An imbalance where harmful free radicals exceed the body's ability to neutralize them, linked to aging and inflammation.
Oxidative Stress Reduction
Lowering the chemical burden placed on cells by excessive reactive oxygen species, helping prevent long-term tissue damage and support healthy aging.
Oxygen Radicals
Reactive oxygen molecules with unpaired electrons that can damage cells if they outpace the body's defenses.

Pepsin Deactivation
The denaturing of pepsin, the enzyme implicated in acid-reflux damage, by higher-pH alkaline water — a mechanism noted in medical overviews of reflux relief.
PFAS
A family of long-lasting synthetic 'forever chemicals' found in some water supplies. Persistent in the environment and studied for health effects.
Plasma
The fluid portion of blood, roughly 90–92% water. It carries nutrients, hormones, proteins, and metabolic waste throughout the body — the liquid highway connecting cells to the rest of you.
pH
The 0–14 scale of acidity/alkalinity. 7 is neutral; healthy blood sits near 7.35–7.45.
R
Redox Signaling
The molecular conversation cells use to detect damage and trigger repair. Hydrogen may support this signaling by gently modulating oxidative stress without shutting down normal cell communication.
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
A filtration method that removes nearly everything — including minerals — leaving a very clean, very flat water.
ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species)
A family of oxygen-based molecules, including free radicals, that can damage cells when they accumulate faster than the body can clear them.
S
Selective Antioxidant
An antioxidant that targets only the most harmful radicals without disrupting the useful oxidative signals cells need to function — a property often attributed to molecular hydrogen.
Spring Water
Water from a protected underground source, bottled at or near the point of emergence.
Structured Water
The idea that water can organize into coherent, low-entropy arrangements that may interact more harmoniously with living cells.
T
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)
A ppm measurement of minerals and other dissolved matter. Not a purity score — context matters.
Terroir
The geographic fingerprint a water carries — its minerals, its bedrock, its climate.
W
Water Clusters
Temporary groupings of water molecules. Some researchers believe ionization creates smaller, more mobile clusters for better hydration.
Water Molecule (H₂O)
The simple, three-atom structure that makes water possible: two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. Its shape gives water its ability to dissolve minerals, transport nutrients, and participate in the chemistry of life inside every cell.
Water Volume (in the body)
For a typical 70 kg adult, the body holds roughly 42 liters of water — about 50–60% of total body weight. Two-thirds sits inside cells as intracellular fluid (ICF). The remaining third circulates outside cells as extracellular fluid (ECF), split between interstitial fluid bathing the tissues and plasma flowing through blood vessels.
