What This Study Means, in Layman's Terms
Most people think hydration is simply about replacing the water they've lost after exercise. But hydration is more complex than that.
When we sweat, we don't just lose water — we also lose electrolytes, and our blood becomes temporarily more concentrated. As a result, it can become slightly thicker, making it a little harder for the heart to circulate oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.
One way researchers measure this is through blood viscosity, which is simply a scientific way of describing how easily blood flows.
Think of the difference between water and honey. Water flows freely. Honey flows much more slowly because it is more viscous. Healthy blood should flow efficiently through even the body's smallest blood vessels to deliver oxygen and nutrients where they're needed most.
In this study, researchers wanted to know whether the type of water people drank after exercise influenced how quickly blood returned to its normal flow characteristics during recovery.
One hundred healthy adults exercised until they became mildly dehydrated. They were then randomly assigned to drink either electrolyzed high-pH alkaline water or standard purified water. The researchers monitored several hydration markers over the next two hours.
The most interesting finding was that participants drinking the electrolyzed alkaline water experienced a greater reduction in high-shear blood viscosity, meaning their blood flowed more easily during recovery than those drinking purified water.
The study did not find significant differences in other hydration measurements, such as body weight recovery, plasma osmolality, or bioimpedance. This suggests the benefit observed was specific to blood viscosity rather than overall hydration status.
While this doesn't mean alkaline water is "better" for everyone or replaces proper hydration, it does suggest that the type of water consumed may influence certain aspects of post-exercise recovery. As with all individual studies, these findings should be interpreted alongside the broader body of scientific evidence.
What the Trial Examined
This randomized, double-blind clinical trial investigated whether electrolyzed high-pH alkaline water influenced recovery after exercise-induced dehydration. Compared with standard purified water, participants consuming the electrolyzed alkaline water experienced a significantly greater reduction in high-shear blood viscosity during recovery, while other hydration markers — including body weight, plasma osmolality, and bioimpedance — showed no significant differences between the groups.
