A Concise Review on Health Benefits of Alkaline Reduced Water

Meenu, Mradula, Khandare et al. · Antioxidant Research · 2025 · Literature Review

“A literature review brings many studies together to look at the bigger picture — where the science agrees, where it doesn’t, and where more work is still needed.”

What This Means

Scientific research often begins with individual studies that investigate one specific question. Over time, researchers publish many studies exploring different aspects of the same topic — sometimes with similar results, sometimes with conflicting findings.

A literature review brings these studies together to look at the bigger picture. Rather than conducting a new experiment, the authors examine the existing body of research to identify common themes, promising findings, and areas where more evidence is still needed.

In this review, researchers explored the current science surrounding alkaline reduced water (ARW) — water produced through electrolysis that typically has an elevated pH, dissolved molecular hydrogen, and a reduced oxidation-reduction potential (ORP).

Across the research reviewed, scientists found growing evidence that ARW may support hydration, help reduce oxidative stress, improve antioxidant activity, support digestive health, and enhance nutrient availability. Much of this interest centers on the presence of dissolved molecular hydrogen, which is being studied for its ability to selectively neutralize some of the body’s most harmful reactive oxygen species while preserving those needed for normal cellular function.

The authors also discuss how ARW may contribute to improved hydration and overall wellness. While many of the findings are encouraging, they emphasize that more large-scale, long-term human clinical studies are needed before definitive conclusions can be made about many of its proposed health benefits.

One of the strengths of this paper is that it doesn’t focus on a single experiment. Instead, it provides a broad overview of where the science stands today, making it an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to understand the current state of alkaline reduced water research.

What the Review Explores

This literature review brings together current research on alkaline reduced water, exploring its proposed effects on hydration, oxidative stress, antioxidant activity, digestion, nutrient bioavailability, and overall wellness. The authors discuss how electrolysis, molecular hydrogen, elevated pH, and reduced oxidation–reduction potential may contribute to these effects — while emphasizing the need for additional long-term human clinical studies.
