The Sea Within: Your Body Is Made of Water

When we think about water, we usually picture the ocean, a river, or the glass beside us.

What we rarely consider is the vast ocean already living inside us.

The average adult body is composed of roughly 50–60% water, amounting to about 42 liters (11 gallons) in a 70-kilogram (154 lb) adult. This water isn't simply stored — it is woven into every organ, every tissue, every cell, and every drop of blood.

In many ways, we each carry an internal sea.

One

A Living River

Your blood is one of the most water-rich systems in the body.

Its liquid portion, known as plasma, is more than 90% water — transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, minerals, and immune cells through an intricate network of vessels. At any moment, nearly 3.5 liters of water are circulating within your bloodstream alone.

This internal river nourishes every living cell.

Two

Every Organ Depends on Water

Water is not evenly distributed throughout the body.

Highly active organs require extraordinary amounts:

  • Lungs83%
  • Kidneys79%
  • Muscles79%
  • Brain73%
  • Heart73%
  • Liver71%
  • Skin64%
  • Bones31%

Each percentage reflects a different role — from carrying electrical signals in the brain, to filtering blood through the kidneys, to cooling the body through the skin.

Three

The Water Inside Your Cells

Perhaps the most fascinating fact is that nearly two-thirds of your body's water lives inside your cells.

Scientists call this intracellular fluid.

The remaining third surrounds the cells and circulates through your blood as extracellular fluid.

Every second, minerals, nutrients, electrical charges, and water move across delicate cellular membranes, sustaining life through an intricate exchange.

Hydration, then, is not simply about drinking enough water. It is about supporting the living environment where every cell performs its work.

Four

Water Is More Than a Beverage

The quality of the water we choose matters because it becomes part of us.

  • It becomes our blood.
  • Our muscles.
  • Our brain.
  • Our heartbeat.

Every glass is an invitation to nourish the remarkable sea already within.

Water is life.
